Tuition-based professional development programs for U.S. college and university faculty and administrators to strengthen global leadership on U.S. campuses.
In today’s interconnected world, preparing students for success requires equipping them with the skills and perspectives needed to thrive in a global workforce. The FLITE program empowers faculty and administrators at U.S. colleges and universities with the knowledge, resources, and professional networks to embed international education into their institutions and cultivate globally-minded graduates. This program combines online coursework, mentorship, a final project, and an Overseas Faculty Development Seminar.
The Council of American Overseas Research Centers and its member centers offer a range of Overseas Faculty Development Seminars designed to serve different audiences and institutional needs while maintaining a consistent academic framework. These include fully funded seminars for U.S. college and university faculty and administrators, customized seminars for partner cohorts, open enrollment programs for broader participation, and the Faculty Leadership for International Training and Exchange (FLITE) program. Together, these offerings expand access to the network of American Overseas Research Centers and to international, place-based learning, while ensuring that each seminar remains focused, relevant, and aligned with participant goals.

In 2026, the first cohort of eight U.S. higher education professionals completed the Faculty Leadership for International Training and Exchange (FLITE) program, organized by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) in partnership with College of the Canyons and hosted by the American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS). Following completion of a ten-week online course in international education leadership and the development of mentor-guided institutional internationalization projects, participants traveled to Indonesia for a two-week immersive seminar designed to strengthen global leadership in higher education through direct engagement with universities, educational organizations, cultural institutions, and community partners.

Through lectures, site visits, discussions with Indonesian scholars and practitioners, and participant project presentations, faculty and administrators explored models of internationalization, intercultural learning, institutional partnerships, community engagement, and cultural heritage while building professional relationships to support future collaboration, student and faculty mobility, and the integration of global perspectives into teaching and campus initiatives.
The seminar included visits to the following institutions and sites:
Institutional Visits: Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (International Office), AMINEF (American Indonesian Exchange Foundation), Museum Bahari (Maritime Museum), Museum Konferensi Asia Afrika (Museum of the Asian-African Conference), Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Sanggar Anak Alam (SALAM Community School), Jogja Disability Arts, Department of Anthropology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Museum Batik Indonesia, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), @america, Bogor Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor), and IPB University (Institut Pertanian Bogor).
Cultural Visits: Café Batavia, Wayang (Puppet) Museum, Bank Indonesia Museum, Kotagede Heritage District, Prambanan Temple, Ratu Boko Archaeological Site, Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan, and Borobudur Temple.
