New Fellowship Opportunity from the Inya Institute for U.S. Postgraduate Scholars

The Inya Institute, a CAORC member center, has created a new opportunity for U.S. Postgraduate scholars who are interested in completing research on Myanmar who have obtained their PhD in the last 10 years. This competition is unique in that it accepts a wide range of proposals and is looking for research that will contribute to studies on Myanmar in any aspect of its wide linguistic, cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity and to a better understanding of the country’s past or present political and socio-economic situation. The fellowship is not open to collaborative projects and is only accepting individual proposals. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in working on topics related to Myanmar and who would benefit from becoming an Inya Institute fellow and making connections with their community of scholars.

There are 4 award opportunities of up to $4,000 as well as a transportation stipend of up to $2,000 for the round-trip airfare from the U.S. to a third country and in-country transportation expenses. Research must take place in a third country outside of the U.S. and Myanmar. For example, for scholars who wish to understand Burmese communities outside of Myanmar could research and interview those who have fled and now live in Thailand or Singapore or focus on anthropological work, and entities outside Myanmar that represent the influence of the country's international connections.

Other examples could be to travel to countries with extensive library and archival material that can be valuable to research on Myanmar like the National Library of France in Paris, The Berlin State Library, in Germany, and The Leiden University Library in the Netherlands just to name a few. The vast possibilities for this fellowship make it a great fit for those who are enthusiastic about the country and who are ready to travel and complete their research.

The application is currently available here and is open until April 29th, 2022 with the awardees being announced in late May of 2022. The scholars will be expected to finish their research by September 15th, 2023. With the application deadline coming up fast be sure to get yours in now!
