MULTI-COUNTRY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
The Multi-Country Research Fellowship enables US scholars to carry out trans-regional and comparative research in countries across the network of Overseas Research Centers as well as other countries. The fellowship supports advanced research in the humanities, social sciences, and allied natural sciences for US doctoral candidates, who are ‘all but dissertation’ and scholars who have earned their PhD or a terminal degree. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or as teams. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the US, at least one of which must host a participating Overseas Research Center. Twelve awards of $12,600 each will be granted. Funding is provided by the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Each year the highest ranking Multi-Country Fellowship applicant will receive an additional $1,000 toward travel expenses through the Mary Ellen Lane Multi-Country Travel Award. The award is named after CAORC's founding director, Dr. Mary Ellen Lane.
CAORC-NEH RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
The CAORC - National Endowment for the Humanities Research Fellowship provides the opportunity for scholars to spend significant time in one country with an Overseas Research Center as a base. The fellowship supports advanced research in the humanities for scholars who hold a PhD or a terminal degree. Applicants must be US citizens or foreign national scholars who have been resident in the US for at least three years. Approximately four awards will be granted and fellowship stipends are $5,000 per month for four to six consecutive months. This program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) under the Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions (FPIRI).
Alumni ambassador program
CAORC has launched an ambassador program as part of a new initiative for alumni activities. The ambassador program involves former fellows of the CAORC research fellowships giving talks at their current institutions about their experience carrying out the fellowship as well as their research. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
The inaugural Alumni Ambassador lecture was held on October 19, 2022 at 4:00pm ET on “Terrains of Research in Afghanistan" by Shah Mahmoud Hanifi (Multi-Country Research Fellowship alumnus) in partnerships with James Madison University. CAORC's first fellowship alumni panel was held on March 27, 2022 at the Association for Asian Studies annual meeting. A similar event was held in virtual format on September 14, 2022 and featured former CAORC-NEH Research Fellows and Multi-Country Research Fellows discussing their research and their experience carrying out projects in affiliation with the Overseas Research Centers. Teaching and Educational Resources Featuring Fellowship Alumni
CAORC has created an open access teaching and educational resources page with teaching modules, webinars, lesson plans, and more from grantees across the different CAORC funding programs, including the CAORC research fellowships, Faculty Development Seminars, and Responsive Preservation Initiative. These resources were designed to support educators in teaching about other countries, world regions, and international social, cultural, and political issues. The page is hosted on Flip, which is an online platform for educators.
