Northwestern University,
in collaboration with the West African Research Center (WARC)
in Dakar, Senegal held a one-day workshop Monday, March 12,
2007 on the theme, “Islam and the Public Sphere in Senegal.” The
event was organized in preparation for a bigger international
gathering on the same topic at Northwestern University in May
2007. Several papers were presented and discussed by prominent
scholars and specialists from academia and the media. The presentations
were followed by very engaging and lively discussions. The
workshop opened with a welcome address from the Director of
the WARC, Professor Ousmane Sene and introductory words from
the representative of Northwestern University, Professor Souleymane
Bachir Diagne. The workshop was attended by forty-two people
including academics, reporters, students and specialists in
political and religious fields. At the end of the workshop,
participants made a request that the Center organize more events
of this kind touching on issues related to Islam. |
