On January 9-11,
2006, the West Africa Research Center (WARC) and the International
Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life, Brandeis University,
hosted The West African Judicial Colloquium in Dakar, Senegal.
This event directly followed and built upon the Brandeis Institute
for International Judges (BJJS) which took place January 2-7,
2006 in Senegal. The Colloquium was a new addition to the four
year old BJJS the purpose of which was to serve as a response
to the increasingly interconnected nature of both judicial
function and jurisprudence and aimed to foster an exchange
of experience and expertise among national and international
judges. The two day event hosted judges from Nigeria, Liberia,
Burkina Faso, South Africa, Senegal, and Italy. Attendee, comprised
of students from the local university, human rights specialist,
government ministers, law professors, and representatives from
media organizations, heard from legal specialist from Canada,
the United States, and many other African nations.
