The West African
Research Association (WARA) hosted Yazi Dogo, a popular cultural
icon from the Republic of Niger, from July 27 to August 30,
2005 as their guest for their African Language Material Archives
project (ALMA). Dogo’s Hausa language theater group, K’ungiyar
Yazi Dogo, having become famous throughout West Africa
for over thirty years, presents traditional comedy and development
oriented theater. Dogo is also a professor of Boston University
students who participate in BU's study abroad program in the
Republic of Niger. ALMA, which is funded through the United
Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO), aims to transcribe footage of Dogo and his theatre
troupes captured in 2004 by John Hutchison and eventually prepare
a documentary on the life of Yazi Dogo and his theater troupe.
During Dogo’s time in Boston, he underwent cataract surgery
which was deemed necessary after discovering cataracts in both
eyes the day after his visit began. The procedure was performed
pro bono by the Boston University Medical School. |
