As part of The Getty
Conservation Institute/World Monuments Fund Iraq Cultural Heritage
Conservation Initiative, the American Center of Oriental Research
(ACOR) hosted a training course for personnel of the Iraq State
Board of Antiquities and Heritage (SBAH) during the period
August 28-September 25, 2005. The course, supported through
funding from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and organizational support from
the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, provided 21 Iraqi
and 3 Jordanian professionals with training on the methodology
and tools needed to collect and update information on the condition,
significance, and management status of the country's cultural
heritage sites for a computerized database that will be provided
to the SBAH through the Initiative, as well as a plan for the
management of their heritage sites. This month-long course
provided an excellent opportunity for professional and cultural
exchange among Iraqis, Jordanians, Americans and Europeans
that will not only benefit cultural heritage sites in Iraq
and Jordan but strengthen relations between all the participating
countries.
