The American Center of Oriental Research
(ACOR) in Amman hosted a training program entitled BookAccess,
which was part of a USAID assistance program administered by
the Mississippi Consortium for International Development, an
association of several universities in that state. The overall
goal of the USAID project was to enhance the ability of selected
universities in Iraq to perform public health education; one
component of this was the improvement of libraries at the University
of Mosul and other institutions. The training conducted at
ACOR during April 8-12 covered BookAccess, a project developed
by California nonprofit Benetech under contract from MCID,
which aims to provide libraries with e-book technology. In
addition to hands-on training, the Iraqi trainees from the
University of Mosul Central Library were provided with electronic
equipment and custom-developed software that allows access
to electronic books from library terminals across campus while
maintaining copyright restrictions. |
